BREAST CANCER MISDIAGNOSIS
Any diagnosis of cancer is emotionally fraught and carries with it the potential for significant treatment. However, the type of cancer determines the correct treatment and when a provider misdiagnosis the type of cancer (or fails to diagnose it at all) the results can be devastating!

Prognostic markers in breast cancer
1. Estrogen Receptor (ER)
2. Progesterone Receptor (PR)
3. Ki-67
4. Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2)

Common Tests to Examine Prognostic Markers
1. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) test measures ER receptors, PR receptors, Ki-67, and the amount of HER2 proteins found on breast cancer cells.
2. In situ hybridization (ISH) test: If an IHC test is borderline with HER2, this test provides more information about HER2. It looks for extra copies of the HER2 gene.
3
Incorrect Testing
When the diagnostic testing fails to correctly determine the type of cancer the treatment provided may be drastically different, including the unnecessary addition of highly toxic chemotherapy that would not be used. For example an incorrect diagnosis of HER2-positive breast cancer results in significant chemotherapy that is not utilized in HER2-negative tumors.
4
Incorrect Treatment
The utilization of incorrect treatment as a result of an incorrect diagnosis can cause significant and permanent damages, including, but not limited to, severe nerve damage, hair loss, lung damage, anemia, nausea and vomiting, hair loss, and many others.
